Latest Project: The College Veteran Readjustment

VIDEO: One college veteran shares her story about coming home as her twin sister details adjusting to her changed sibling.  (same veteran for my creative project).

Creative Project | Readjustment

I have recently finished my capstone project as part of my graduate studies.

Today’s college student-veterans returning from conflict overseas face the readjustment period, which can be a difficult time for many, but not for all returning veterans. Some have trouble adjusting to civilian life; others are diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or other emotional and relationship problems. This creative project aimed to address this contemporary college veteran issue through one Iraq veteran, serving as a representative profile of other veterans.

Using narrative writing techniques like immersion, participate observation, saturation reporting, digression, and background research, this creative project was an in-depth piece of literary journalism that follows one BSU student from her enlistment in the Army National Guard when she was seventeen, through her deployment to Baghdad, Iraq from May 2008 to March 2009, her transition period after she returned home where she had to readjust to friends, family, civilian life and cope with a posttraumatic stress disorder diagnosis, and will finish with her graduation from Ball State University in May 2015 with a master’s degree.

The story will be availble as an ebook download upon completion.
